Imagine: you are the head-waiter of the dining car on the Paris-Nice line. You are away from home three days a week. At home sits your meek little wife whose life seems to be limited to reading long historical romances such as Gone With The Wind. She just reads through the time you are with her, never lifting her eyes from page. One night in Nice, you are told to call the Paris police. They tell you your wife has been injured in a car accident at 3AM in a section of Paris you can’t understand why she’d ever be in. And why would she be out at 3AM? You hurry home. She is in a coma. You try to piece together what happened to her. Through a series of clues you find that your dull quiet wife was not at all the woman you thought her to be. She was the very opposite. You find that not only was she betraying you for years, but she was also using you as a pawn in a plan that went far beyond your idea of marriage. To say anything more would spoil it. I admire the team of Boileau-Narcejac for many of their suspenseful mysteries, but this is my favorite. Each time I reread it gets better. John King
