It’s middling Allen, which means that fans won’t be sorry to see it, while everyone else can wait until the next Bullets Over Broadway. Allen makes so many films we tend to take him for granted. So it pays to realize that this is a man who has made more good or great movies than any other writer-director ever to work in America — including Sturges, Welles, Chaplin and Keaton. He is already an immortal, though, alas, not in a way that might allow him someday to do love scenes with women, say, 800 years his junior. – Mick LaSalle*
