As one might guess from the title, a poker game is central to this film, a great big poker game of the Old West played in the back room of a roaring cattlemen’s saloon. One hand of that game, a hand that takes almost an hour to play, provides the meat and potatoes of this film. Taken together with a delightful surprise ending that serves as a spicy dessert, it is suitable fare for the season. — Robert Alden, 1966.
