Nervy and nakedly emotional, it’s the sort of film that gives actors a wide, potentially dangerous range of expression. They either look like fools, do great work or, more often, combine the two. Nicholson is superb (..) “The Crossing Guard” isn’t great film making but it has passion and honesty and gives evidence of Penn’s considerable skill at working with actors. — Edward Guthmann
