Russian medics of the Soviet Army’s Main Military Sanitary Directorate are photographed in Ostrovsky Square in the earliest days of the Siege of Leningrad (also known as the Leningrad Blockade). The siege began on 8 September 1941 when Axis forces severed the last road to the city.
