[Affiche de 1950.]
A simple, charming story out of the humor and compassion of the Provencal French, along with some rich and delightful demonstrations of honest character. It is the story of a Marseille bartender who gives his gruff but gentle comfort to a girl deserted after a damaging romance by his own beloved and wandering son. It is the story of how this old fellow assists in wedding the girl to his best friend, joins them in cherishing the baby and then rebukes his own son’s claim when the latter returns. That’s all there is to the story, so far as plot is concerned. But that doesn’t begin to give an outline of the richest contents of this film. For the real charm and revelation is in the shaping of characters, in the beautiful, laughing, heart-warming expansion of personalities. Bosley Crowther, 1950.
