Buffalo Bill and the Indians or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson, which opened at five theaters yesterday, is nothing if not eccentric, and I can’t imagine anyone missing it who is interested in the continuing Altman explorations on the outer edges of commercially acceptable film form or in his preoccupation with Americana. It’s a sometimes self-indulgent, confused, ambitious movie that is often very funny and always fascinating. — Vincent Canby, 1976.
