When you really think about Breakdown — and believe me, that would probably require spending more time thinking about the movie than the filmmakers did — it doesn’t make much sense. But, then, neither did Speed, neither did Mission: Impossible, both box office winners. The elements for success are all there. Bad things happening to decent people, vigilantism, the revenge of a nerd and the vanquishing of evil. Plus car chases, pick-up truck chases, tractor-trailer chases and Jeep chases. — Barbara Shulgasser
